Your grandma called them Hens and Chicks, the scientific name is Sempervivum, I call them adorable. Sempervivum are cold hardy, drought tolerant succulents. They are whimsical and full of character and charm. There are many varieties that range in size, color (from blue green to various reds and pinks), some look like they have "cobwebs," some fringed or tufted, some even velvety. They have babies (or "chicks") that shoot off the main rosette, or "hen." There color is most brilliant in Spring and Fall.
