Jasmine

Jasmine is a nice ground cover, shrub or vine, most easily trained to grow in a "mat" or on a trellis or arbor.  I have 3 kinds to choose from: Confederate, Winter, and Asian.

Confederate Jasmine

Confederate Jasmine (or star jasmine, aptly named because of it's star shaped blooms) has a moderate growth rate and when supported, vines can reach 20'. It is really a fascinating plant to watch.  I have it growing in a corner and threaded through the posts on my front porch and in the summer, my daughter marvels at the fragrance wafting through her bedroom window.  It has lovely, waxy, dark green leaves and newer growth is slightly lighter green.

Winter Jasmine

Winter jasmine blooms yellow and can grow about 4' unsupported but when trained, can grow about 15' tall.  It roots easily where the vines touch the soil and while the 1" blooms are not fragrant, winter jasmine makes up for it by blooming in the winter. This is a nice shrub to plant in retaining walls and raised beds, the vines will cascade over the edges.
I apologize for not having a picture of winter jasmine in my yard...I have run out of sunny spots!  I would like to have a spot for everything but I only have an acre to work with!

It really does bloom in mid-winter, mine blooms in January or February.  What a delight to go out to your snow-covered gardens to find these lovely little blooms!

Asian Jasmine

In contrast to Confederate jasmine, Asian jasmine has darker green, narrower leaves with small yellow blooms.  Excellent choice for a ground cover.  I am often asked about what to plant on an incline, especially out of frustration when someone has spent a bloody fortune on grass seed, only to have it washed out as it tends to do on our clay soil.  The "mats" grow 6-12" tall and each plant about 3' wide.
